Eames: The Architect And The Painter
Premiere: Thursday, February 23 | Rated NR | Documentary / Biography | 88 min

One night only.
Exclusively at the Gateway Film Center.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life – from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age – have been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, EAMES: THE ARCHITECT AND THE PAINTER is the first film since their death dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

In his fascinating exploration of a triple homicide case in Conroe, Texas, master filmmaker Werner Herzog (CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, GRIZZLY MAN) probes the human psyche to explore why people kill- and why a state kills. In intimate conversations with those involved, including 28-year-old death row inmate Michael Perry (scheduled to die within eight days of appearing on-screen), Herzog achieves what he describes as “a gaze into the abyss of the human soul.” Herzog’s inquiries also extend to the families of the victims and perpetrators as well as a state executioner and pastor who’ve been with death row prisoners as they’ve taken their final breaths. As he’s so often done before, Herzog’s investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

The urban legend known as 'The Father's Day Killer' began some years after the demise of serial rapist/murderer Chris Fuchman. Since the 1970s, the use of contraceptives has tripled in North America alone and a generation of fathers fell asleep with the covers pulled tight, buttocks clenched. The story has become a fire-side cautionary ritual on camping trips, often used by fathers to warn their sons of the dangers of unplanned pregnancy. That deep seeded fear of penetration, violation and eventually death waned as the murder and rape of fathers continued to decline all over the world. Unfortunately those numbers didn't remain low, and it would seem that the legend is not yet complete...

Presented by Wex@Gateway.

“Unabashedly entertaining! A rollicking Chinese western! Few Chinese blockbusters achieve this film’s level of sophistication in nuanced dialogue, plot twists, and bravura acting!”—Hollywood Reporter

The highest grossing domestic Chinese film ever, this comic variation on the Western has plenty of gun slinging, superstars, story twists, and sharp dialogue to make it a highly entertaining ride. During the Warlord era of the 1920s, a bunch of bandits hijack a train that’s transporting the new governor. When the governor dies in a train crash, the leader of the bandits (Jiang Wen) impersonates him to share the fortune from the hijacking with the townspeople. That’s when a local mobster (Chow Yun-Fat) shows up to launch a battle of wits and bullets over the loot.

This smart, deadpan satire mixes laughs and combat in a way that recalls Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone, and John Woo (but with a more subversive streak). The film also provides meaty roles for some of the best-known Chinese actors working today, including the great Chow Yun-Fat (THE KILLER, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON), Ge You (who won the Best Actor award at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Zhang Yimou’s TO LIVE), and Carina Lau (DAYS OF BEING WILD, INFERNAL AFFAIRS). LET THE BULLETS FLY's writer/director/star Jiang Wen began his career as one of the most charismatic “sixth generation” actors, including a memorable performance in RED SORGHUM, Zhang Yimou’s debut film, before becoming one of China’s most highly regarded (yet controversial) directors. His 2000 film DEVIL ON THE DOORSTEP won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and was then banned in China.

How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie HOUSE (HAUSU)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States, it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.

The series also depicts authentically the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960s traditional family values.

The Corridor
Premiere: Friday, April 06 | Rated NR | Horror / Thriller |

Presented by Nightmares on High Street. Sponsored by CD 101 @102.5 fm. All seats $6.

"Keep an eye on Kelly and MacDonald, because THE CORRIDOR is one of the most impressive independent films of this year’s Fantasia, a masterful science-fiction/man-vs.-man thriller that also happens to be one of the most emotionally resonant Canadian horror films I’ve seen in a long time." -Fangoria

In THE CORRIDOR, Tyler Crawley's mother has recently passed away and he has had a complete breakdown. When his friends try to help, one of them finds himself with a knife through his hand, landing him in an institution. Now, nearly one year after his mother's death, he is being released. In an attempt to rebuild lost friendships, Tyler's friends arrange for a weekend getaway at his mother's old country house. There they will scatter her ashes, bond and heal. Things spiral into hell when the group encounter something in the woods nearby, an energy field of some sort, a corridor possibly between dimensions. They don't know what it is, but standing inside it makes them feel damn good. Stronger, smarter, healthier than they've ever felt. It also kicks a sting into their senses. Their hearing, vision, smell and taste sharpen, but also something else. The corridor has given them a window into each others' minds, and with that, into each other's jealousies, resentments, fears and neurosis. Tempers flare. Confusion builds. Violence explodes, again and again. Terrifyingly random acts begin to occur.

“An edge-of-your-seat emotional roller-coaster ride about ordinary people… it’s sometime terrifying, often heart-rending and completely worth it.”—Salon.com

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Film, the deeply moving new film from the Dardenne brothers (THE SON, LORNA'S SILENCE) delves into the emotional life of troubled 11-year-old Cyril (newcomer Thomas Doret). When his father (Jérémie Renier) abandons him, Cyril obsessively tries to find his bicycle- after all, his father must have cared about him enough not to sell that off, he reasons. Almost by accident, he becomes the ward of a kind hairdresser (Cécile de France, HAUT TENSION, HEREAFTER), a woman who seems surprised to find herself so determined to help him. With his wild, unpredictable behavior and his disastrous search for father figures, Cyril risks losing her- though she refuses to give up without a fight. Full of heartbreaking betrayals and unexpected grace, THE KID WITH A BIKE is a film about a child, abandoned to the elements, learning to become good. The Dardennes- among the great filmmakers of our time -have created another poetic, universally resonant drama about parents, children, and moral responsibility.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe's writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author's help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer's next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it's too late.
